The word Zen evokes certain ideas in the public consciousness, such as "balance", "clarity", or "mindfulness." The word Zen itself, however, remains largely undefined. Many people know that the word is Japanese, and they may also know it is derived from the Chinese word Chan, wich in turn is derived from the Sanskrit word dhyana, meaning meditation. In China, from the sixth century onward, the word Zen surpassed this definition and gained additional meaning and color. Tang-dynasty China wove Zen into its culture. Art, philosophy, and politics all enjoyed its influence. Zen spread beyond China to other East Asian societies with great impact and with far-reaching consequences. From one perspective, Zen became a religion in its own right, a school of Buddhism. From another perspective, it became an important cultural Force whose influence can hardly be overstated.

As the abbot of two temples,

I couldn't assist the Buddha way.

My parting message to you all,

Don't go seeking after something.
